Key Steps (Applicable to Most Canadian Banks)

The above steps are shown using the RBC mobile app,
but most Canadian banks offer similar online bill payment functions for paying taxes.
Although the layout may differ from bank to bank, you only need to remember these key steps:

  1. Log into your online or mobile banking and select “Pay a bill / Pay bills”.
Under Payee, search for “CRA” and select
“CRA PERSONAL INCOME TAX – [Year] TAX RETURN” as the payee.
  2. Set the Account Number as your SIN (Social Insurance Number).
The Nickname or Memo field can be filled with the taxpayer’s name as a reminder.
  3. Follow the payment screen prompts to complete your personal income tax payment for the year.

Note: The CRA automatically updates the tax year in its payee list.
Once you’ve successfully set up the CRA payee the first time, you typically do not need to manually update the year in future.

Paying Current-Year Instalments

If you want to pay tax instalments for the current year,
in Step 4 you can instead select “CRA REVENUE TAX INSTALMENT” as the payee.
The other steps remain the same. Any instalments you pay during the year will be reconciled when you file your tax return,
resulting in either a top-up payment or a refund.
